AUTOMOTIVE/ENGINE MECHANIC, #F47
Basic Purpose:
Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of automobile, truck, boat or other engines or motors and related assemblies or in the supervision or management of an automotive repair shop.
Typical functions:
The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:
Overhauls and repairs engines or motors; disassembles engines and repairs or replaces defective parts; reassembles engines and makes adjustments as needed; uses oxygen-acetylene, electoarc-welding or similar types of equipment.
Installs timing gears, crank shafts, bearings, cylinders, drive systems, and hydraulic systems; repairs and maintains heavy duty construction machinery in the shop or at job sites.
Performs preventive maintenance on automobiles, trucks, tractors and other equipment; oils and lubricates engines and chassis; adjusts brakes and changes tires; washes and cleans vehicles.
Orders parts and supplies to maintain an inventory of parts; prepares required records on maintenance or repair work performed.
Supervises a repair shop; reviews the work of mechanics; provides training and assistance in the analysis of engine malfunctions and decisions concerning repair or replacement of parts.
LEVEL DESCRIPTORS:
The Automotive/Engine Mechanic job family consists of five levels which are distinguished based on the duties assigned, the expertise required to perform assigned work, and the responsibilities assigned for providing supervision to others.
Level I Code: F47A Salary Band: E
This is the basic level where employees are assigned routine work involving minor repairs and preventive maintenance on various types of vehicles and other equipment. In this role they may perform work such as changing oil and oil filters, lubricating chassis, changing tires, washing and cleaning vehicles and similar tasks. Responsibilities may also include repairing lawn mowers, outboard motors and other small engines.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of the mechanical principles of internal combustion engines; of tools and equipment used in making repairs to automobiles, trucks, and other power equipment; and of the use of oil and other lubricants. Ability is required to perform preventive maintenance; to identify causes of equipment failure; and to make routine mechanical repairs.
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of one year of experience in mechanical work on internal combustion engines or chassis; or an equivalent combination of education/training and experience.
Level II Code: F47B Salary Band: G
At this level employees are assigned responsibilities at the full performance level for performing a full range of maintenance and repair work involving automotive, truck, bus, tractor, boat or other internal combustion engines. Responsibilities will routinely involve repair or replacement of defective parts, installing major engine parts and components and related work. Responsibilities may also be assigned for providing training and guidance to workers performing routine preventive maintenance work.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of the tools, equipment and terminology of internal combustion engine mechanics; of the functioning of internal combustion engines; of drive systems and other systems in various types of vehicles and other equipment; and of parts-ordering procedures within the assigned shop. Ability is required to diagnose and repair mechanical malfunctions; to identify and repair other malfunctions in vehicles and other types of equipment; and to follow oral and written instructions.
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of two years of mechanical experience in the repair of internal combustion engines; or an equivalent combination of education/training and experience, substituting one year of related technical training for each year of the required experience.
Level III Code: F47C Salary Band: H
This is the specialist level, where employees are assigned responsibilities for performing highly skilled mechanical work in the repair and maintenance of specialized and heavy duty equipment. Responsibilities may include trouble-shooting repair needs which are difficult to identify; independently completing major repair projects, or directing projects requiring a team effort, including supervision of others in the completion of some work.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include those identified in Level II plus knowledge of repair costs and costs of new equipment. Ability is required to perform advanced and technical repairs, including the use of welding equipment; and to direct the work of other mechanics and helpers.
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of those identified in Level II plus two additional years of qualifying experience.
Level IV Code: F47D Salary Band: I
This is the leadership level where incumbents are assigned responsibilities involving the supervision of a repair shop or unit and assigned mechanics. In this role they will provide training, review work, assist in the diagnosis of mechanical problems and perform other tasks involving discipline, employee development, preparation of reports and ordering parts as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include those identified in Level III plus knowledge of supervisory practices and principles and standard parts inventory procedures. Ability is required to train and supervise the work of others.
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of those identified in Level III plus one additional year of qualifying experience.
Level V Code: F47E Salary Band: J
At this level employees are assigned responsibilities involving the management of a large repair shop or mechanical repair program. This will include supervision of lower level supervisors and overall responsibility for directing the various repair and maintenance functions of the shop.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include those identified in Level IV plus knowledge of management principles and practices. Ability is required to test complete work to ensure adequate performance.
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of those identified in Level IV.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Some positions may require that the successful applicant possess a valid Oklahoma driver’s license at the time of appointment.
Some positions may require possession of a valid Oklahoma commercial driver’s license, class A or B with appropriate endorsements referenced in United States Department of Transportation Title 47, Chapter 5, Section 101 et seq., at the time of appointment. Persons appointed to such positions at the Oklahoma Department of Transportation must obtain a class A commercial driver’s license no later than five months after the date of appointment.
Applicants for positions with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation must take and pass a drug test prior to appointment. These tests will be administered through the appointing authority. This requirement is referenced in 49 Code of Federal Regulations, parts 40 and 382.
