MEDICAL TRANSCRIPTIONIST, #E19

BASIC PURPOSE:

Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving skilled medical transcription work in typing medical reports from dictating equipment or from physicians notes or other sources.

LEVEL DESCRIPTORS:

The Medical Transcriptionist job family consists of two levels which are distinguished based on the complexity of work assignments and the responsibility assigned for the leadership of others.

LEVEL I:             Code: E19A             Salary Band: E

This is the career level of the job family where employees are responsible for performing a full range of work in transcribing various forms of notes and records, including dictation, written notes, charts and other documents.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of medical terminology; of grammar, punctuation and spelling; of dictating and word processing equipment; of clerical office procedures; and of report and letter writing. Skill is required to type. Ability is required to follow instructions; to organize work; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of one year of experience typing and transcribing medical reports from dictating equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting the successful completion of a college/technical training course in medical transcription for only six months of the required experience.

LEVEL II:             Code: E19B             Salary Band: G

This is the leadership level where employees are assigned responsibility for the supervision of others in completing the transcription and typing of medical reports and records. This includes assigning and reviewing work, providing training and insuring that required tasks are completed and includes responsibilities for disciplinary actions, employee development, evaluation of performance and other administrative tasks.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of medical terminology; of supervisory principles and practices; of office methods and procedures; of grammar, punctuation and spelling; of dictating and word processing equipment; and of report and letter writing. Ability is required to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; to apply policies; and to read and comprehend procedures and manuals. Skill is required to type.

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of three years of experience typing and transcribing medical reports from dictating equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting the successful completion of a college/technical training course in medical transcription for only six months of the required experience.
