CORRECTIONAL
TRAINING OFFICER
BASIC PURPOSE:
Positions in this job
family are assigned responsibilities for conducting specialized training and
staff development programs at an assigned correctional facility, at a training
academy or for a department region/division.
This includes evaluating and determining employee training needs,
preparing required curriculum and conducting training on various topics and
skills.
TYPICAL
FUNCTIONS:
The functions within
this job family will vary by level and the unit to which assigned, but may
include the following:
· Conducts job analyses and assessments to evaluate employee
training needs and evaluates and develops curriculum, including lesson plans,
participant manuals, videos and graphics.
· Conducts classroom training, workshops or seminars to
increase the knowledge and skills of employees in various subjects or tasks
including pre-service and in-service training.
· Prepares training reports and maintains training records on
participants.
· Schedules and coordinates training sessions and locations.
·
· Provides supervision to other training officers in planning
and conducting correctional training programs.
· Coordinates department or division training or
organizational development programs.
· Manages contracts with service providers.
LEVEL
DESCRIPTORS:
This job family
consists of four levels which are distinguished based on the complexity of the
assignments skills required to complete specific assignments, and the
responsibility for the supervision of others.
Level I: Code: C40A Salary Band: I
This is the basic
entry level at a facility or district.
At this level employees perform routine professional level work in
completing various training activities.
This may include conducting various types of training using existing
materials and plans, assisting in the development and coordination of training
programs and maintaining training records.
Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of the principles
and methods of employee training; of correctional security policies and
procedures; and of various types of equipment used in adult education. Ability is required to conduct classroom
training, workshops or seminars; to communicate effectively both orally and in
writing; to prepare lesson plans and other training materials; and to establish
and maintain effective relationships with others.
Education
and Experience
requirements at this level consist of a bachelor’s degree or an equivalent
combination of education and experience, substituting one year of correctional
or security work, training, adult education or human resource development for
each year of the required education; or an equivalent combination of education
and experience.
NOTE: Experience must
have been the primary responsibility in order to be considered as qualifying

This is the career
level of this job family where employees are assigned full responsibility for
developing and conducting various types of training and related activities in a
correctional training program at a facility, unit, or district. This will include preparing any required
lesson plans or other materials, conducting classes, workshops or seminars,
evaluating participant results, preparing required reports, and other related
activities.
Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities
required at this level consist of those included in Level I plus the ability to
plan and conduct employee training programs.
Education
and Experience
requirements at this level consist of those identified in Level I plus one
additional year of qualifying experience or a master’s degree in adult
education, or human resource development.
Level III: Code: C40C Salary Band: K
This is the
specialist level where employees perform advanced training activities at an
academy or division level. This may
include developing and presenting training courses and programs, creating an
annual training plan, conducting needs assessments, designing, developing and
updating curriculum, conducting research, writing lesson plans, evaluating
training programs, conducting trainer development and leadership development
programs, and coordinating distance learning programs.
Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities required at this level consist of those included at Level II
plus knowledge of leadership and organizational development principles; of
problem solving techniques; interviewing techniques; and of group facilitation
and conflict resolution techniques.
Ability is required to design surveys and analyze survey results; and
conduct research using the Internet and other computer based resources.
Education
and Experience
requirements at this level consist of those identified in Level II plus two
years of experience in training, adult education or human resources development
in a correctional facility.
Level IV: Code: C40D Salary Band: L
This is the
leadership level where employees are responsible for the direction and
administration of a training program to include supervision of assigned
training professionals.
Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities
required at this level include those identified in Level III plus knowledge of
supervisory practices and principles and ability to supervise and direct the
work of others.

requirements at this level consist of those identified in Level III plus one
additional year of qualifying experience.
