HIGHWAY SIGN TECHNICIAN, T27
BASIC PURPOSE: Positions in this job family are responsible for performing work in the fabrication of signs and other traffic control devices in the Central Sign Shop of the Department of Transportation.
TYPICAL FUNCTIONS: The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:
LEVEL DESCRIPTORS: The Highway Sign Technician job family has four levels which are distinguished by the level of the complexity of specific job assignments, the extent of responsibility assigned for a specific task, the level of expertise required for completion of assigned tasks, and the responsibility assigned for supervision of others.
Level I: Code: T27A Salary Band: E This is the basic level where incumbents perform entry level work in a training status using standardized procedures to perform work in the fabrication of highway signs and traffic control devices.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of sign making methods; of equipment, tools, and materials used in sign making; and of safety precautions. Ability is required to follow oral and written instructions.
Education and Experience requirements at this level are none.
Level II: Code: T27B Salary Band: F This is the career level where incumbents perform a variety of tasks in the layout and fabrication of signs and other traffic control devices.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required at this level consist of those identified in Level I plus knowledge of highway sign specifications; and of shop equipment repair and maintenance. Ability is required to make highway signs; to lay out special signs; to read scaled plans and specifications; and to operate power equipment.
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of one year of experience in general sign making, operating sign shop equipment or highway sign fabrication.
Level III: Code: T27C Salary Band: G This is the specialist level where incumbents perform a variety of complex technical tasks and may serve as a lead worker. Incumbents will provide training and guidance to lower level technicians.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required at this level consist of those identified in Level II plus knowledge of quality control techniques. Ability is required to check finished products for quality and conformance to required standards and specifications. Ability is required to distinguish the different types of sheeting from companies and manufacturers.
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of three years of experience in general sign making, operating sign shop equipment or highway sign fabrication.
Level IV: Code: T27D Salary Band: H This is the leadership level which involves supervising employees in the fabrication, warehousing, and repair of signs and other transportation devices. Duties will involve planning and controlling the inventory of materials, ensuring schedules are met and reviewing procedures. Holds production meetings to improve efficiency and quality in the manufacturing of signs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required at this level consists of those identified in Level III plus knowledge of state and federal regulations pertaining to the construction of highway signs; of the methods and techniques of sign fabrication; of inventory control; of record keeping; of shop safety procedures; and of supervisory techniques. Ability is required to plan and schedule work assignments. Ability is required to produce signs using all shop equipment and processes.
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of five years of experience in general sign making, operating sign shop equipment or highway sign fabrication.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must be willing and able to fulfill all job-related travel normally associated with this position.
Applicants must be able to properly wear a full-shield mask respirator and withstand exposure to solvents and fumes. |
