POWER GENERATION COAL YARD EQUIPMENT OPERATOR, Q40

 

BASIC PURPOSE:

Positions in this job family are responsible for operating mobile and stationary equipment used in the receiving, handling, storage and distribution of coal within a coal-fired electrical power generation plan.

 

TYPICAL FUNCTIONS:

The functions performed within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:

  • Operates stationary coal handling equipment, such as rotary car dumpers, coal crushers, and coal conveyers.
  • Performs coal handling using large mobile equipment, such as Caterpillar style bulldozers, scrapers, and excavators.
  • Operates large dump truck to transport coal and ash materials.
  • Monitors and inspects coal conveying systems by means of indicating instruments, annuciators and display monitors.
  • Performs lockout/tag out safety procedures to isolate equipment for work by maintenance personnel.
  • May provide training to fellow employees.

LEVEL DESCRIPTORS:

The Power Generation Coal Yard Equipment Operator job family has four levels based on the complexity of assignments and type of equipment operated and responsibility for supervision.

 

Level I:                                   Code:  Q40A                           Salary Band:   J

Employees at this level serve in a training capacity under close supervision of a skilled operator.  Incumbents will perform only the more routine tasks.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include ability to read, interpret and carry out complex written or oral instructions.

 

Education and Experience requirements at this level are none.

 

Level II:                                  Code:  Q40B                           Salary Band:   K

At this level employees perform work involved in the operation and maintenance of stationary coal handling equipment.  Employees may train subordinate employees.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of coal handling and storage equipment; of care and upkeep of mechanical devices and machinery and of safety procedures used in the handling and storage of coal.  Ability is required to operate coal handling machinery and equipment.

 

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of two years of experience in the operations of coal handling equipment.

 

Level III:                                 Code:  Q40C                           Salary Band:   L

At this level employees perform the entire range of the operations and maintenance of both stationary and mobile coal handling equipment.  Employees at this level are responsible for training other personnel.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of coal storage procedures; of the operation and maintenance of various types of coal handling equipment; of safety procedures as they apply to the handling and storage of coal; and of basic mechanical principles.  Ability is required to operate and maintain stationary and mobile coal handling machinery and equipment; and to train personnel.

 

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of those identified in Level II plus one additional year of experience in the operation of coal handling equipment.


Level IV
:                                 Code:  Q40D                           Salary Band:   N

At this level employees perform supervisory work.  Employees supervise the coal handling operations for an entire shift.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include those identified in Level III plus knowledge of supervisory practices and procedures; and of record keeping and inventory procedures.  Ability is required to plan work schedules; to supervise and coordinate the work of subordinates; to make independent decisions; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

 

Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of those identified in Level III plus one additional year of experience in the operation of coal handling equipment.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Some positions may require shift work on rotating basis, including nights, weekends and holidays as called upon to staff 24/7 electric generating plant.
