LAW ENFORCEMENT CAPITOL PATROL OFFICER, G50
BASIC PURPOSE: Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving law enforcement duties in the Capitol Patrol Division of the Department of Public Safety. This includes conducting patrols in an assigned area to enforce motor vehicle, criminal, and other laws and safeguard citizens and property, apprehend violators, and provide assistance to the general public.
TYPICAL FUNCTIONS: The functions within this job family will vary by level, but may include the following:
LEVEL DESCRIPTORS: The Law Enforcement Capitol Patrol Officer job family consists of four levels which are distinguished based on the complexity of assigned duties, the expertise required to perform job assignments and the responsibility assigned for providing supervision to others.
Level I: Code: G50A Salary Band: NA At this level employees are assigned duties as a Capitol Patrol Trainee which involves receiving formal classroom and other training in law enforcement operations and procedures, state and federal laws and other areas, such as self defense and the use of firearms in preparation for beginning work as a law enforcement officer.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of routine police and security practices. Ability to follow oral and written instructions; to give clear and definite directions; to make oral and written reports; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; and to react quickly and effectively in emergency situations.
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of the statutory requirements of Title 47 O.S. 1998 Supp. Section 2-105B.2.a.(3): “2. No person shall be appointed ... unless the person is a citizen of the United States of America, of good moral character; and: a. for commissioned officer positions, shall be not less than twenty-one (21) years of age nor more than thirty-five (35) years of age, and shall possess: 3. for any person appointed to the Oklahoma Capitol Patrol Division, a high school diploma or General Educational Development equivalency certificate; shall possess either six (6) months of previous experience in law enforcement or security work or fifteen (15) successfully completed semester hours from a college or university which is recognized and accepted by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers and whose hours are transferable between such recognized institutions.”
Level II: Code: G50B Salary Band: NA At this level employees are assigned entry level duties as a probationary law enforcement officer in the Capitol Patrol Division of the Department of Public Safety. In this role they will receive additional training and perform assigned duties under close supervision. This may involve assisting an experienced officer in completing assigned duties or the assignment of a patrol area under close observation with frequent checks to monitor the officer’s performance and determine any need for assistance until completion of all required training and demonstration of the ability to perform assigned duties without close supervision.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of general law enforcement principles and practices; of state and federal laws, rules and regulations related to public safety and criminal conduct; of traffic control; of methods and techniques used in conducting investigations; of emergency response policies and procedures; and of first aid techniques. Ability to follow oral and written instructions; to give clear and definite directions; to make oral and written reports; to react quickly and decisively in emergency situations; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of those identified in Level I plus graduation from the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training Academy (CLEET) with certification as a “Full-Time, Certified Law Enforcement Officer in the State of Oklahoma”. (Copy of certification must be provided at time of application. Certification as an “Unarmed Security Guard” or as a “Certified Reserve Law Enforcement Officer: is not qualifying certification.)
Level III: Code: G50C Salary Band: NA This is the career level of this job family where employees are assigned responsibility for a full range of law enforcement duties in an assigned area and will perform highly independent work in conducting assigned patrols and providing protection for citizens and property in the assigned area. Some responsibilities may also be assigned for providing training and assistance to new officers.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level consist of those identified in Level II.
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of those identified in Level II plus one year of experience in law enforcement or security work or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Level IV: Code: G50D Salary Band: NA This is the leadership level where employees are assigned responsibilities involving the supervision of other Capitol Patrol officers in the performance of their duties. In this role, they will be responsible for conducting patrols in an assigned area, advising and assisting assigned officers as needed, checking equipment, personal appearance and required records and reports, assisting in arranging work schedules, advising staff on changes in policies or procedures, and other related duties.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include those identified in Level III plus knowledge of supervisory principles and practices. Ability to supervise the work of others.
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of those identified in Level III plus one additional year of qualifying experience.
