INFORMATION SYSTEMS TELECOMMUNICATIONS TECHNICIAN, B20
BASIC PURPOSE: Positions in this job family are assigned responsibilities involving the installation, maintenance and repair of various communications and/or electronics equipment or components. This includes radios, telephones, mobile communications equipment, radar units, data-logging equipment, load control equipment, electronic security equipment, and other similar devices and related components and systems including radio towers and repeater stations.
TYPICAL FUNCTIONS: The functions within this job family will vary by level and organization, but may include the following:
LEVEL DESCRIPTORS: This job family consists of three levels which are distinguished based on the complexity of work assignments, the experience required to complete assigned duties, and the responsibility assigned for the leadership of others.
Level I: Code: B20A Salary Band: G This is the basic level of this job family where employees are assigned responsibilities for performing entry level work in a training status to build their skills in repairing and maintaining telecommunications and electronic equipment and components and in identifying and resolving problems related to communications systems and various electronic devices or components.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of communications theory and electronic circuitry; of radio transmitting, receiving and testing equipment; of telephones, mobile communications equipment and other electronic devices and components; of electronic symbols, schematics and diagrams; and of current improvements and developments in various communications systems and operating equipment. Ability is required to diagnose and repair malfunctions in radios, telephones and other communications equipment; to use a variety of tools and electronic testing equipment; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of one year of experience involving the construction, maintenance, or repair of various types of telecommunications or electronics equipment or an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting completion of an accredited vocational or technical curriculum in electronics for the required experience.
Level II: Code: B20B Salary Band: H This is the career level of this job family where employees perform a full range of work involving the general maintenance, repair or installation of various types of telecommunications or other electronic equipment or in work related to a specialized area of a telecommunications system, such as the maintenance and repair of radio transmitting towers. Responsibilities may also be assigned for providing training or guidance to other technicians in the completion of assigned work.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include those identified in Level I plus knowledge of FCC rules and regulations; and demonstrated ability to inspect, repair or maintain various types of telecommunications equipment.
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of two years experience in the maintenance, repair or construction of telecommunications or other electronic equipment or networks or an equivalent combination of education and experience (see Level I) for one year only of the required experience.
Level III: Code: B20C Salary Band: I This is the leadership level of this job family where employees are assigned responsibilities involving the supervision of others in the installation, maintenance or repair of telecommunication equipment and related components. This includes assignment and review of work, evaluation of performance, insuring completion of assigned projects or activities and providing training or assistance as needed. Some positions may be assigned duties as a direct supervisor, which includes additional responsibilities for performance management, employee development, disciplinary actions and other administrative tasks.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include those identified in Level II plus knowledge of supervisory practices and principles and ability is required to supervise and direct the work of others.
Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of four years of experience in the maintenance, repair or construction of telecommunications or other electronic equipment or networks, or an equivalent combination (See Level I) for one year only of the required experience.
SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS: Some positions may require a Federal Communications Commission permit or certification by a FCC recognized radio telecommunications group.
Applicants must be willing and able to fulfill all travel requirements normally associated with this position.
