You got the job issues, you got the family issues. Everything hitting all at once can really, really get to you. Client: I was going thru some hard times and I needed someone to talk to and I didn’t have anyone at home so I was really thankful that I had someone I could turn to during these hard times Client: I just find that sometimes the pressures of everyday life can get to you and it’s just nice to know that there’s someone there that you can talk to. . Counselor Well when employees come to our office they usually have issues. Now what our goal as the employee assistance specialists is to match a solution to that issue in magnitude scope and severity. If we do our job correctly, then that employee can get back and do what they need to do at the level that they started. Anncr: It’s not always easy coping in today’s fast-paced society. At some point almost everyone feels overwhelmed by the pressures of personal and family life coupled with the stress from our jobs and other obligations. ( Music Up: Brief Full Screen Graphic Open: Oklahoma Sate Seal/Employee Assistance Program Anncr: The state employee assistance program is a way for state employees and their families to get free, confidential help with personal problems. Anncr: Participation in the state employee assistance program is voluntary and completely confidential. Counselor: We take confidentiality very seriously in this office. We want to protect that individual’s confidentiality in every way we possibly can because we want them to feel comfortable and not have to worry about breaking their anonymity. Client: I really don’t think I would have given this a shot if it wasn’t confidential. I mean that was a huge selling point. Anncr: When you or a family member contacts the state EAP, a services coordinator will gather some basic information about your needs and schedule a visit with the next available counselor. Blanche: We select counselors depending on the client’ specialized needs. Some clients prefer talking with a male as opposed to a female counselor. And then some clients come in and ask for a specific counselor because they’ve been recommended, that particular counselor. We will get a little bit of information and then set up an appointment within the next couple of days. If for any reason, once they’ve met with a counselor, they’d like to talk to another counselor, we will do that with no questions asked and the counselors do not take that personally. Anncr: Most counseling sessions take place in a face-to-face setting. This helps your counselor get to know you and better understand your needs. Counselor: One-on-one sessions are really good with clients because they help develop a rapport. I think it’s important when you meet face to face to kind of get an idea about the client and over the phone conversations or sessions are also available in the event that time or location is an issue. Counselor: Outside the Oklahoma City metro area, we meet at locations that you feel comfortable. You can suggest a local library or church. Anncr: At your initial meeting with your counselor, you will be asked to fill out an information sheet. You will not need to bring your insurance card or make any kind of co-payment, since all services provided by the employee assistance program are free. Client: It’s important to have someone to talk to during the hard times in my life because sometimes I feel like I don’t have any friends, I don’t have anyone to listen to what I need to say. Counselor: Rest assured that your job will not be jeopardized as a result of utilizing the EAP program. Our main concern is your confidentiality. And we want to help you with your problem and help you maintain your privacy. Client: Having a confidential counselor made me feel more at ease in what I was going through. And I know that I can talk to somebody and not be embarrassed to share that information with someone, really made me feel a lot better. Anncr: Counseling sessions continue until you or your counselor feels that your needs have been met and your issues are resolved. Client: I think that counseling has definitely strengthened and improved our relationship quite a bit. Counselor: In most cases we can deal with most issues that come in to our office. But on the rare occasion we do make referrals. Now what we’ll do is we’ll find a referral source that will deal specifically with the issue that that person is having, if it’s above and beyond our scope of expertise. Client: Really having someone to open up to, that can give you that extra angle. That’s a major factor in coming here and being able to talk to somebody openly and confidentially. Counselor: The EAP is here for state employees and their families. Whatever the issue, they don’t need to go it alone. We’re here for them.
