Water Quality Division

WQ Priority Watershed Project

Map North Canadian River Canton to Overholser

North Canadian River 2007-2010

Background

Water samples at various locations along the North Canadian River in Oklahoma have repeatedly exceeded Oklahoma water quality standards for fecal coliform, Escherichia coli (E. coli), and Enterococcus bacteria as well as turbidity. As a result, the segment of the North Canadian River from Lake Overholser to the Canton Dam is the focus of the North Canadian River Water Quality Project, which began in 2007.

Purpose of the Project

Funded by the State of Oklahoma, the Environmental Protection Agency, and cost-share contributions from landowners, the project goal is to install best management practices that reduce bacteria, nutrients, and sediment entering the river.

Cost-Share Incentives

• Up to $90/acre annually for Riparian Exclusion
• $19.20/acre annually to Convert to No-Till
• Up to $54/acre annually for Grass Planting
• Cost share for Pipe Drop Construction
• Cost share for other approved practices

Cost-share rates are based on approved NRCS cost, not actual installation cost.
