OJA ADDS PLASTICULTURE PROGRAM TO FACILITIES
Office of Juvenile Affairs has received a grant from the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture for a program developed in 2005. The Plasticulture program is designed to help smaller farmers with limited resources to produce specialty crops. OJA wants to implement the program at the two facilities in Manitou and Tecumseh to create an opportunity for the youth to learn the farming culture and to grow their own crops. OJA hopes to provide the tools in gaining an education and the skills for jobs when the youth return to their community, while at the same time enjoying the final results of their hard work. It’s a healthy investment for them and an opportunity to give back to their communities. Some of the vegetables that are grown will be given to the local food banks.
“We entered into a partnership with the Department of Agriculture to help us develop and expand the existing gardens at the two facilities. Plasticulture is a program that OJA can take advantage of with its unique watering applications and shorter time in producing certain crops. We have also reached out to individuals in both communities for donations to the gardens. It has produced a lot of new friendships and developed lasting bonds with our community partners. We look forward to the coming months and the products we will grow.
