The Oklahoma Insurance Department has initiated a strategic partnership with the Oklahoma Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust (TSET), the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH), and the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC) – College of Public Health, to develop, implement and promote tobacco cessation programming as part of health insurance benefits and coverage to be offered by health insurers in the state.
Smoking causes thousands of deaths annually in the state and costs Oklahoma businesses, taxpayers and individuals more than $2 billion every year. Tobacco products are highly addictive, with nearly 7,300 new users under age 18 starting to smoke each year in Oklahoma. Smoking causes a vast number of health problems ranging from cardiovascular disease to many forms of cancer.
