Seat belts save lives! You have heard it for years, but somehow you just still don't believe that you will ever need them. No one ever does. But the simple fact is that 1 out of every 10 drivers on the road will be involved in a traffic crash at some point in their lives, and you stand a far better chance of surviving a serious injury crash if you are wearing a seat belt.

2010 Seat Belt Use Shows Increase from 2008 (View complete survey report in pdf format)
The 2010 Seat Belt Observational Survey reflects a marked increase of 1.7 percentage points from last year to 85.9% in Oklahoma (up from 84.2%). Seat belt use has steadily increased since a primary seat belt law was enacted November 1, 1997. The OHSO continues to focus efforts toward increasing the seat belt use rate among all groups, but notably among pickup truck occupants and teens.

Picture of Rollover Simulator operator Lt Burris

The Rollover Simulator is used to demonstrate the effectiveness of seat belts.  The cab of a Chevrolet S-10 pickup is mounted on a rotating spindle, with a clutch and braking system.  The system simulates the rotational effect a rollover crash at approximately 30 miles per hour has on the vehicle occupants.  Weighted dummies are used in the demonstration, which will graphically demonstrate what happens in a rollover crash with and without seat belts being worn.  Both the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office and the Tulsa Police Department currently have a Rollover Simulator available for traffic safety presentations.

To schedule a Rollover Simulator demonstration, contact one of the following:
Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office, by phone at (405) 990-4360.
Tulsa Police Department, Officer Craig Murray, by email or by phone (918) 669-6865
