bus clipartOCTOBER

is a great month to become more aware of safety issues related to school buses, school zones and pedestrians!

Oct. 8 is Walk to School Day, and its part of International Walk to School Month.

Oct. 19-23 is School Bus Safety Week.

Tips for students

If you ride a school bus, know and practice the safety rules for waiting at the bus stop, getting on and off the bus and riding the bus. If you walk to school, obey the safety rules for pedestrians. Always cross at crosswalks or corner-to-corner. Obey all traffic lights or crossing guard instructions.

Always buckle up when riding in a car, and ride in the back seat. Its the safest place for young people. Be a good role model for siblings and friends help them learn and practice safety rules!

 Tips for motorists

Slow down and obey all traffic laws and speed limits; pay attention to school zones.

When a school bus is stopped and the red flashers are on, drivers in both directions are required to stop before reaching the bus and remain stopped until the flashing signals are deactivated.

Watch for children walking in the street and for youngsters gathering near bus stops.

When backing out of a driveway or leaving a garage, look for children walking or bicycling to school.

 Tips for parents

Help your children learn and practice safety rules for walking, bicycling and riding in a car or bus. Always buckle up in your car and make sure your children are secured in age and size-appropriate restraints. Be a good role model for your children by practicing safety rules.

Always supervise young children walking or biking to school and as they wait at the bus stop.
