Labor Market Statistics - Current Employment Statistics

Each month the Current Employment Statistics (CES) program surveys about 150,000 businesses and government agencies, representing approximately 390,000 individual worksites, in order to provide detailed industry data on employment, hours, and earnings of workers on nonfarm payrolls for all 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and over 300 metropolitan areas and divisions.

BLS's Experimental All Employee Hours and Earnings Series by State: The Current Employment Statistics (CES) program began work in 2005 to add new series on hours and earnings. New series have been developed to measure the average hourly earnings, average weekly hours, and gross monthly earnings of all nonfarm private sector employees. Additionally, CES is adding average overtime hours in manufacturing. Historically, the CES program has published average hours and earnings series for production workers in the goods-producing industries and non-supervisory workers in the service-providing industries. These workers account for about 80 percent of total private nonfarm employment. The new hours and earnings series are more comprehensive in coverage, thereby providing improved information for analyzing economic trends and improved input to productivity and personal income series.
