Parents of student-employees are responsible for insuring that their child has a Certificate of Age and Schooling (work permit) which is usually obtained from the student-employee's school principal. A copy of this certificate must be kept on file at the work place.
During the school year, the student-employee may work up to 3 hours on a school day, 8 hours on a non-school day, 18 hours in any one week, and only between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
During the Summer, the student-employee may work up to 8 hours a day, 40 hours in any one week, and only between the hours of 7 a.m. and 9 p.m.
For every 8 consecutive hours the student-employee works, he or she must be given a one hour cumulative rest period.
For every 5 consecutive hours the student-employee works, he or she must be given a half hour cumulative rest period.
Employees of this age group may not work in manufacturing, warehousing, public utilities, communications & construction nor may they operate motor vehicles or power driven machinery and other occupations declared as hazardous (see list below).
