The goal of the intervention is to maximize the initiation of mental health treatment and aftercare among adolescents screening positive for previously unrecognized suicide risk during visits to the ED. Study author Ian Rockett, a professor of epidemiology at West Virginia University, used data from the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics to determine that deaths from intentional and unintentional injury were 10 percent higher in 2009 than in 2000. During that time period, deaths from car crashes declined while deaths from poisoning, falls, and suicide rose. Rockett notes that many of the poisoning deaths may be intentional. “Suicides are terribly undercounted,” said Rockett. “I think the problem is much worse than official data would lead us to believe.”

•	The National Strategy for Suicide Prevention calls for increasing the percentage of patients who receive mental health care following emergency department (ED) treatment for a suicide attempt. A recent randomized controlled trial found that a brief family therapy session in the ED, combined with follow-up telephone calls, increased the proportion of young people who received mental health care after a suicide-related ED visit. Unfortunately, neither the intervention nor follow-up mental health care reduced the rate of subsequent suicide attempts, ideation, or related clinical problems (e.g. severe depression).
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued black box warnings on the use of antidepressants by children, adolescents, and young adults. These warnings were based on the occurrence of suicidal thoughts and attempts, not on actual suicides. A re-analysis of data from 41 previous studies that included 9,185 patients has found no evidence of increased suicide risk in children and adolescents ages 7-18 receiving active medication. Relative to placebo, depression symptoms lessened among treated patients in this group.
Mental illness is one of the leading causes of disability in the United States. New State-level data produced by SAMHSA will advance our understanding of the nature and extent of mental illness, which is critical in the planning and implementation of effective programs and services in communities to improve the lives of individuals with mental illness and the families of these individuals. Nationally, 44.5 million adults aged 18 or older experienced any mental illness in the past year, corresponding to a rate of 19.7 percent of the adult population. Among States, the highest rate occurred in Rhode Island (24.2 percent) while the lowest rate occurred in Maryland (16.7 percent). Among adults aged 18 or older, the rate of serious mental illness (SMI) in the past year ranged from 3.5 percent in Hawaii and South Dakota to 7.2 percent in Rhode Island. Nationally, the rate was 4.6 percent, which equates to 10.4 million Americans with SMI.

by Jeffrey Fishberger, M.D.
Recently, during National Suicide Prevention Week, extensive efforts were made to both increase awareness of the risks for suicide as well as specific ways to help those at risk. In the past several days, despite these efforts, there have been reports of young people -- like 14-year-old Jamey Rodemeyer -- who have taken their own lives. It is important to know that suicide is not the result of one but of many contributing factors, and while a negative environment at school and/or at home can impact a person's psychological well-being, each of those individual factors does not automatically lead to a young person ending their life.

protective factors provides critical information to assess and manage suicide risk in individuals. For
communities and prevention programs, identifying risk and protective factors provides direction about
what to change or promote. Many lists of risk factors are available throughout the field of suicide
prevention. This paper provides a brief overview of the importance of risk and protective factors as they
relate to suicide and offers guidance about how communities can best use them to decrease suicide risk.

Suicide rates for middle-age people highest since 1998, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Sep. 21, 2011
This article tells the story of Marcia Rownd, whose father died by suicide at the age of 54, to highlight the problem of suicide among the middle-aged. The number of people ages 45 to 64 dying by suicide in the United States is the highest it has been since 1998. As Steven Garlow, chief of psychiatry at Emory Hospital and chairman of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s metro Atlanta chapter, pointed out in this article, suicide has moved from the 11th to the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. “That’s not a good sign, and it speaks to something going wrong that we ignore at our peril.” Garlow cites the economy, job loss and lack of strong social and family connections as factors that can contribute to suicidality among middle-aged Americans.
