Definitions of Training Areas

 

Collaboration/Building Partnership (3-6 hour training)

Participants will identify strategies to build an effective coalition membership, how to attract and engage stakeholders, and ensure active member engagement.
 

Contributing Factors/Risk and Protective Factors (3-6 hour training)

Participants will identify the risk and protective factors which increase or decrease an individual's ability to resist the use and abuse of drugs.
 

Cultural Competence/Diversity (3-6 hour training)

Participants will identify strategies to incorporate cultural competency into their comprehensive prevention plan.
 

Environmental Strategies (3 hour training)

Participants will identify and summarize statewide priorities including key environmental strategies.
 

Media Advocacy (3-6 hour training)

Participants will identify social marketing techniques and campaigns and why they often rely on the use of mass media channels to provide information to the public or encourage specific target groups to take specific action.
 

Needs Assessment (such as OPNA) (3-6 hour training)

Participants will demonstrate how to assess community ATOD needs and resources in their community.
 

Prevention Fundamentals (e.g., SAPST) (2-5 day training)

Participants will demonstrate an understanding of attitudes, drug facts, research theory, cultural competency, the Strategic Prevention Framework, logic model, evaluation, human development and media upon conclusion of the SAPST training.
 

Readiness Assessment (3 hour training)

Participants will demonstrate an understanding of the various stages of community readiness for prevention at the community and state level.
 

Prescription Drug Misuse/Abuse (3 hour training)

Participants will identify the definition of prescription drug misuse/abuse, be able to identify trends and statistics, and the short and long term effects of prescription drug use and misuse.
 

SAMHSA's Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) (1 day training)

Participants will demonstrate an understanding of SAMHSA's Strategic Prevention Framework and identify the five steps including cultural competency and sustainability used to promote successful implementation of the strategic prevention framework.
 

Screening Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) Training (1.5 hour training)

Participants will come away with a complete understanding of the components of the SBIRT (Screening Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment) public health alcohol prevention model.  Participants will also have the opportunity to practice screening and view an example of the motivationally based intervention.  This class prepares participants to establish and implement SBIRT at their own unique site.
 

Sustainability (3 hour training)

Participants will demonstrate an understanding of the sustainability of prevention strategies to continue over a period of time, especially after specific funding ends.
 

Underage Drinking Prevention (training time varies)

Participants will learn the Environmental Prevention Model components related to underage drinking reduction.  They will identify key strategies currently being used to reduce underage access to alcohol such as: Responsible Beverage Sales and Service training, compliance checks, party dispersals, shoulder taps, etc.  
 

Utilizing Epidemiological Data (1.5 hour training)

Participants will demonstrate a basic understanding of data and how it can be applied.  The strengths and limitations of specific data will be covered so the user has a better understanding of how to interpret and report data.
 

Youth Leadership Development (3-6 hour training)

Participants will learn a variety of ways youth can make a difference in their community.  Emphasis will be placed on how to ensure activities are action based.
