Special Population Workgroups

As a result of the SPE planning process, nine special population workgroups were formed to review, assess and suggest enhancements to the statewide substance abuse prevention service system. Each workgroup, consisting of five to ten active members from communities across the State, facilitated by a professional consultant plus ODMHSAS staff, began its meetings in April 2012 and met through June 2012 to review and assess substance abuse prevention services provided to its population of focus. The Guidelines for the Special Population Workgroups can be accessed here along with the PowerPoint for their orientation.

A report of recommendations was submitted to the ODMHSAS by each workgroup.

  • African-American Workgroup
  • Asian-American Workgroup
  • Latino Workgroup
  • LGBTQI2 Population Workgroup
  • Low-Income Population Workgroup
  • Military Families Workgroup
  • Native-American Workgroup
  • Older Adults Population Workgroup
  • Rural Population Workgroup

Several of these workgroups continue to meet periodically in an advisory capacity to the ODMHSAS.

In addition to the special population workgroups, a Credentialing Workgroup, comprised of five regional prevention coordinators and facilitated by the State Director for credentialing, was formed to review and assess substance abuse prevention services with a view toward workforce development. This workgroup also met between April and June 2012, and submitted a report of recommendations to the ODMHSAS. The Credentialing Workgroup can be accessed here.

ODMHSAS collaborated with the Oklahoma Office of Faith-based and Community Initiatives to host several focus groups that included faith leaders across the State. The focus groups were facilitated by a pastor/community leader who is trained in the field of substance abuse. A Summary Report of their Recommendations was submitted to the ODMHSAS in June 2012.
