Women's Physical and Mental Health / Eldercare
The focus of this Committee is to create an awareness of the issues related to health, women, and their families. Oklahoma's health status is near the bottom in all areas of both physical and mental health. The unhealthy behaviors and adverse childhood events in persons living in Oklahoma are precursors to chronic physical and mental conditions. The Committee is focused on the following activities for 2009-2010: The Bone Health Awareness Initiative is a national campaign. This campaign discusses that Osteoporosis is a silent disease which causes bones to become brittle and makes women at risk for bone fractures. Determining risk for fractures and osteoporosis and healthy bone health are emphasized. The Heart Health campaign is called "Heart Truth." The campaign is symbolized by a "red dress pin" which denotes that regardless of what you wear or who you are, heart disease is the #1 killer of women. Determining your risk for heart disease; knowing and understanding the the risk factors; and behavioral change of these risk factors are the key focus areas.
