Family Assistance Coordinators
The mission of the Family Assistance Coordinators is to establish and maintain lines of communication with the families of victims whose homicidal or suspicious death is being investigated by this office. The position is housed in both the Central and Eastern Division Offices. The primary purpose of this program is to assist families of homicide victims as to the status of the medical examiner's investigation in the death of their loved one, as well as to assist other families, as needed, in understanding the medical examiner's role in the investigation of the death of their loved ones. These positions are partially federally-funded through the Victim of Crime Act (VOCA) and provide information about the State of Oklahoma Victims' Compensation Program. The Family Assistant Coordinators inform families of the availability of benefits that may help in covering the out-of-pocket costs for funeral expenses, loss of support benefits, payment for professional emergency grief counseling, costs of ambulance transportation and hospital bills that may have arisen from their loved one's victimization.
We believe that having individuals in the central and eastern division offices of this agency dedicated to dealing with family issues will foster closer relationships with other community services. The result is one of great mutual benefit in assuring identification, clarification and a quicker exchange of information and compassionate care for for victims and their families.
