NOTICE

Former Oklahoma Mining Commissioner Ernest R. Achterberg passed away Monday night, April 6, 2009, around 10 pm.  Mr. Achterberg suffered a heart attack late Thursday afternoon.

The funeral will be held on Thursday, April 9, 2009, 1:00 pm at the Mason Chapel - Asbury United Methodist Church located at 6767 South Mingo Road, Tulsa, Oklahoma. 74133 (918.492.1771)

There will be a visitation from 6 pm – 8 pm on Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at the Moore's Southlawn Funeral home (contact 918.663.2233). Burial services will be at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Tulsa.

Mining Commission Chairman George Fraley intends to honor former Commissioner Achterberg at the April 16, 2009, Oklahoma Mining Commission meeting.

ACHTERBERG - Ernest R., 83, passed away Monday, April 6, 2009, in Tulsa, OK. Born September 1, 1925, in Little Rock, AR to Reginald Ernest and Rosa (Schneyer) Achterberg. Employed with the U. S. Department of Interior in Tulsa, OK from 1978-1991. Graduate of Mabelvale, AR High School and Missouri School of Mines with a degree in Mine Engineering in 1953. Received master's degree in 1971 from. University of Arkansas in Civil Engineering. He was on the Oklahoma State Mining Commission serving as Chairman, Secretary or Vice-Chairman since 1991. He was in the U. S. Army Air Corp. Preceded in death by: his parents; sister, Anna Jean Alexander. Survived by: wife, Mollie; son, Milton Carl Achterberg and wife, Cheryl; daughter, Kay Webb; sister, Elsa Mann; grandsons, Steven Achterberg and Shane Achterberg; great-grandchildren, Zachary and Zane Achterberg. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at Moore's Southlawn. Service will be 1 p.m., Thursday, April 9, 2009, at Asbury United Methodist Church (Mason Chapel). In lieu of flowers, family suggests contributions be made to the Asbury Foundation at Asbury United Methodist and/or Gideon International.
