New H1N1 Influenza Cases Announced
The cases were confirmed by the OSDH Public Health Laboratory and include persons reporting flu-like illness from April 23 through May 7. Many of the cases have recovered. The new case confirmations include the following:
The OSDH anticipates there will be additional cases of the new virus reported in the days ahead because Oklahomans have little to no immunity against it. For those who have medical conditions that put them at risk of complications from influenza, the disease could indeed be serious.
Also today the OSDH announced that beginning Tuesday, May 12, the OSDH will begin posting case confirmations on its Web site daily at 11 am Monday through Friday. Persons will be able to check the Web site at www.health.ok.gov for the most current case numbers as of close of business the preceding day. As the outbreak continues, it is important to note that confirmations will only be posted after the patient and health care provider have been alerted and a public health investigation has begun.
The OSDH has observed a decline in the number of calls to the H1N1 flu toll-free hotline. The hotline will remain open today and Tuesday, May 12, from 8 am to 8 pm. However, beginning Wednesday, May 13, the hotline will return its operation to normal business hours, 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday. Persons with questions should call 1-866-278-7134. Oklahomans can also stay informed by visiting www.health.ok.gov and www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu, or by calling your local county health department.
