HOMELAND SECURITY AND HORNETS TEAM TO ENCOURAGE OKLAHOMANS TO BE PREPARED FOR EMERGENCIES 10/16/2006 OKLAHOMA CITY - The Oklahoma Office of Homeland Security (OKOHS) and the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets are announcing a new Public Service Announcement (PSA) encouraging Oklahomans to think about preparedness planning. The PSA features Desmond Mason, NO/OKC Hornets player; Sherri Coale, OU Women's Basketball Coach and Bart Conner, Olympic Gold Medalist and will run during Hornets games at the Ford Center in addition to home and away broadcasts on Cox Cable Channel 7.  more

OKLAHOMANS URGED TO PARTICIPATE IN NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH

Oklahoma City - Governor Brad Henry has proclaimed September 2006 as OKlahoma National Preparedness Month, part of a nationwide effort held each September to spur Americans to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses and schools. The goal of the month is to increase public awareness about the importance of preparing for emergencies and to encourage individuals to take action.

"Oklahomans know all too well the destruction that can be caused by disasters, whether they are natural or manmade," Gov. Henry said. "There are simple steps that people and businesses can take to be more prepared in the event of an emergency. I applaud the Oklahoma Office of Homeland Security, and its coalition partners for promoting preparedness efforts statewide." more 

STATE OFFICE OF HOMELAND SECURITY, OKLAHOMA CITY'S PARKS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PARTNER FOR NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH 2006 The students at Thelma R. Parks Elementary School in Oklahoma City have been learning about preparedness through interactive games, puzzles, coloring pages and classroom lessons.  They will be showing off their knowledge at a special assembly Friday, Sept. 1.  After a brief weather presentation by the National Ocean Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the 5th-grade students will go on a scavenger hunt for items that belong in their emergency supply kit. more

2nd ANNUAL BUSINESS CONTINUITY FORUM

There is still time to get in on the half-day Business Continuity Forum to be held at the Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism (MIPT) on September 13th from 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The Forum will include briefings on topics such as the the terrorism threats Oklahoma businesses face and the tools and tactics needed to safeguard your IT system. THREAT LEVEL RAISED TO ORANGE FOR DOMESTIC FLIGHTS WITHIN U.S.

(posted August 10, 2006) Oklahoma City ¿ Gov. Brad Henry today raised the Oklahoma Homeland Security Threat Level from Elevated Condition (¿Yellow¿) to High Condition (¿Orange¿) for the aviation sector, specifically regarding domestic flights operating through Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City and Tulsa International Airport. This decision comes after British authorities arrested 21 extremists accused of plotting to destroy multiple passenger aircraft flying from the United Kingdom to the United States. In addition, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has raised the nation¿s threat level to Severe (¿Red¿) for commercial flights originating in the United Kingdom bound for the United States. more

FY 06 COMPETITIVE TRAINING GRANT PROGRAM NOW OPEN

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Preparedness Directorate¿s Office of Grants and Training (G&T) is pleased to announce the release of the Fiscal Year 2006 Competitive Training Grants Program (CTGP) Solicitation for Concept Papers.  The CTGP solicitation will provide funding for national preparedness training initiatives that further the DHS mission of preparing the nation to prevent, protect against, respond to, and recover from incidents of terrorism involving weapons of mass destruction or catastrophic events.  more 

30 OKLAHOMA DEPARTMENTS AMONG THOSE RECEIVING EQUIPMENT THROUGH DHS'S COMMERCIAL EQUIPMENT DIRECT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (CEDAP)

OKLAHOMA REDHAWKS AND TULSA DRILLERS JOIN OTHER MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL TEAMS BY PITCHING IN TO PREPARE FANS FOR EMERGENCIES

For the third consecutive year, Minor League Baseball is partnering with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security¿s Ready Campaign to educate and empower Americans to prepare for natural disasters and potential terrorist attacks.  More than 35 teams, including the Oklahoma RedHawks and the Tulsa Drillers, are stepping up to the plate during the 2006 season to help encourage fans to prepare for emergencies.  more

LESS THAN 10 DAYS REMAIN BEFORE THE ASSISTANCE TO FIREFIGHTERS GRANT PERIOD CLOSES

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program office is reminding fire departments and non-affiliated emergency medical organizations that less than ten days now remain in the FY 2006 fire grant application period.  The application period for AFG began March 6, 2006 at 8 a.m. Eastern Standard Time and ends at 5 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on April 7, 2006.  If you have started an application, please be sure to COMPLETE IT AND SUBMIT IT before the deadline.  All applications must be submitting (hit the submit button in the online application) to be considered for a grant award.  Once an application is submitted electroncially, an automatic notification via email is sent that we have received it.  more

HOMELAND SECURITY RESPONSE UNITS DELIVERED TO LOCAL FIRE DEPARTMENTS

OKLAHOMA CITY - The Oklahoma Office of Homeland Security (OKOHS) and Governor Brad Henry announced today the delivery of five Regional Hazardous Materials (HazMat) Response Units to the communities of Claremore, Lawton, Moore/Norman, Oklahoma City and Tulsa. These units are the largest component of the five-tiered Oklahoma Regional Response System, a project that OKOHS has obligated more than $16 million toward.  more

Ready is a national public service advertising campaign created by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in partnership with The Advertising Council, which is designed to educate and empower Americans to prepare for and respond to emergencies including natural disasters and potential terrorist attacks.  As Homeland Security encourages families to prepare for emergencies through Ready, we are regularly asked by parents and teachers if there is information appropriate to share with children.  In response to these requests, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and The Advertising Council have created Ready Kids, a family-friendly extension of the Ready campaign.  more 

DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY ANNOUNCES RISK-BASED FORMULA FOR URBAN AREAS SECURITY INITIATIVE GRANTS

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced today $765 million in direct funding for high threat urban areas as part of the fiscal year 2006 Urban Areas Security Initiative (UASI).  UASI provides resources for the unique equipment, training, planning, and exercise needs of select high threat urban areas.  more
