GIVE THEM THE BEST CHANCE OF QUITTING

You’ve taken a terrific first step to help your friend, co-worker or loved one quit smoking or chewing tobacco by seeking scientifically proven methods. Research shows us that those who see their doctor, use FDA-approved medications and take advantage of counseling have the best chance of quitting.

One effective, easy way to help someone quit is to encourage them to call the Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline. 1-800-QUIT-NOW (English: 800-784-8669, Spanish: 800-793-1552, Deaf and Hard of Hearing: 877-777-6534)

SHOWING YOUR SUPPORT

  • Don’t be judgmental – let them know you care.
  • Ask what you can do to best help them quit. Some people might like constant reminders and encouragement, while others do better with less interaction.
  • Adopt a smokefree home policy.
  • Be sensitive to their moods, especially during the first few days or weeks after they quit. Irritability, difficulty concentrating and disturbed sleep patterns are common.
  • Staying busy can help take their mind off smoking. Suggest things you can do together. Take a walk, do chores, go to a movie, go shopping or have dinner in a smoke-free restaurant.
  • In the first 2 weeks after quitting, help them with things that may cause stress. You might want to run some errands for them, take care of their kids or help them out in other ways.
  • Continue to encourage your loved one every step of the way.
