Sanitarian and Environmental Specialist Registration Advisory Council

General Information for Applicants 

The blank application below is in .PDF format and may be downloaded, printed out and used in applying for registration as a: Registered Professional Sanitarian (RPS) or Registered Professional Environmental Specialist (RPES) or Registered Professional Sanitarian-in-Training (RPSIT) or Registered Professional Environmental Specialist-in-Training (RPESIT) by any person qualifying under the provisions of the Oklahoma Sanitarian and Environmental Specialist Registration Act.

The Act provides as follows: 

    1.    Registration fees are to be paid upon approval of application at the time of interview by the Sanitarian and Environmental Specialist Registration Advisory Council. These fees must be paid before a certificate can be issued.

  1. Twenty-dollars ($25.00) for Registered Professional Sanitarian (RPS) or Registered Professional Environmental Specialist (RPES).
  2. Ten-dollars ($10.00) for Registered Professional Sanitarian-in-Training (RPSIT) or Registered Professional Environmental Specialist-in-Training (RPESIT).
  3. Thirty- dollars ($30.00) exam fee must accompany all initial applications requiring exam.

    2.    Official college transcript or copy thereof must be submitted with application.

  1. Eligibility for registration: 

Registered Professional Sanitarian (RPS) or Registered Professional Environmental Specialist (RPES): Have two (2) years of postgraduate, full-time experience working in the fields of public health or environmental protection; with a four-year baccalaureate degree with a major in public health, environmental health, environmental science, physical science, natural science, biological science, agricultural science, or an equivalent from an accredited college or university with at least thirty (30) semester hours of work in physical, natural and biological sciences, public health and/or environmental health or environmental protection or both environmental health and environmental protection. A letter from your employer verifying your experience in the field of public health or environmental protection since the time of receiving your degree must be attached to your application. The letter must state a description of your specific job duties and the dates of employment. If your experience is from more than one source, a letter from each source is required. Military experience may be verified by submission of copies of performance reports.

Registered Professional Sanitarian-in-Training (RPSIT) or Registered Professional Environmental Specialist-in-Training (RPESIT): Have a four-year baccalaureate degree with a major in public health, environmental health, environmental science, physical science, natural science, biological science, agricultural science, or equivalent from an accredited college or university, with at least thirty (30) semester hours of work in physical, natural, and biological sciences, public health and/or environmental health or environmental protection or both environmental health and environmental protection; but does not have two (2) years of postgraduate, full-time experience working in the fields of public health or environmental protection. Certificate may be in effect not to exceed 30 months.

Registration of sanitarians and/or environmental specialist was created by statute in order to safeguard life, health and property, and to establish and protect the professional status of those persons whose duties in environmental sanitation call for knowledge of the physical, the biological, and the social sciences. Therefore, in evaluating the evidence submitted to it, the Sanitarian and Environmental Specialist Registration Advisory Council will carefully consider the applicants’ knowledge and understanding of the principles of sanitation and the sciences, together with such other qualifications as may be established by the State Board of Health in conjunction with the Sanitarian and Environmental Specialist Registration Advisory Council in accordance with the provisions of the statute.

All applications are due a minimum of 10 days prior to the Sanitarian and Environmental Specialist Registration Advisory Council meeting dates.

You will be notified when your application is scheduled to be heard by the Council and you must be present to take a written examination to be considered.
