Resource Information

Addenda to the Nurse Aide Training Program curriculum: In order to comply with amendments to the Nursing Home Care Act, Title 63 O.S. flfl 1-1901 et. seq. and Nurse Aide Training and Certification rules, OAC 310:677-1-1 et. seq., please complete and submit the appropriate addendum for the curriculum of your approved nurse aide training program. The addenda are located on the Nurse Aide Registry Applications and Forms page.

PowerPoint presentation for the Oklahoma Department of Career Technology’s Customized Business and Industry Training Summer Conference, August 6, 2008. This program provided an update on the requirements for Nurse Aide Training and Competency Evaluation Programs; addenda to the nurse aide training program applications and new Oklahoma requirements for legal residence affidavits.

CMA Continuing Education Sign-In Sheet: The attached sign-in sheet was offered by Anita Hasenmyer, Red River Technology Center, as a tool they have found useful in documenting the certification numbers of CMA CEU attendees. The program uses the certification numbers to confirm the certification is current prior to issuing the CMA CEU. The form will also address most requirements in rule for submission of CMA CEU attendee rosters to the Nurse Aide Registry office:

OAC 310:677-13-12(d) An approved continuing education program shall submit to the Department within 30 days after the conclusion of a continuing education class the following information:
(1) The title of the class and number of hours offered;

(2) The name, certification number, and number of hours attended for each certified medication aide who satisfactorily completed the continuing education class.

Training Opportunities and Materials

The Oklahoma Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association endorses the Barbara Broyles Alzheimer and Dementia Training Program for Nursing Assistants for nurse aide training programs. The linked curriculum may be freely adopted and incorporated into your curriculum. Please provide appropriate credit.

Alzheimer’s Care Training Opportunity for Instructors: Registration will be opening soon for this October 23-24, 2008, Long Term Care Provider Training at the Moore-Norman Vo-Tech South Penn Campus. The Best Friends Approach to Alzheimer's Care - New Directions in Research, Treatment, Program Development Care, David Troxell, MPH, co-author of Best Friends Approach to Alzheimer's Disease. (This is a one-day training; the second day is a repeat.) Audience: Administrators, Directors of Nursing, Activities and Social Service Directors, nurse aide training program instructors. Oklahoma law provides that nurse aide training programs must include ten (10) hours of training in the care of Alzheimer’s patients.

63 O.S. fl 1-1951(A)(3) The State Department of Health shall have the power and duty to determine curricula and standards for training and competency programs. The Department shall require such training to include a minimum of ten (10) hours of training in the care of Alzheimer’s patients;

The Code of Federal Regulations at 42 CFR fl 483.152(b)(5), requires the curriculum of the nurse aide training program to include under care of cognitively impaired residents:
(i) Techniques for addressing the unique needs and behaviors of individual with dementia (Alzheimer's and others);
(ii) Communicating with cognitively impaired residents;

(iii) Understanding the behavior of cognitively impaired residents;
(iv) Appropriate responses to the behavior of cognitively impaired residents; and
(v) Methods of reducing the effects of cognitive impairments.
