OHEC Meeting to Connect with Faith and Community Health Partners

Building healthier communities will be the focus of the next Oklahoma Health Equity Campaign meeting on Thursday, Oct. 24, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Oklahoma State Department of Health, 1000 N.E. 10th St., Room 806, Oklahoma City.  The meeting will highlight presentations originating by videoconference from Dallas, TX, and hosted by the Region VI Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Office of the Assistant Secretary of Health. The theme of these presentations will focus on “Building Healthier Communities through Education, Empowerment, and Partnership.”

Regional partners from social services, health and faith-based (representing churches, mosques, Dharma centers, temples and other religious traditions) organizations are encouraged to attend. To register, please contact (405) 271-9444, ext. 56543, or email karlab@health.ok.gov. Participants will be asked to share ideas for the development of a larger DHHS Faith and Community Health Summit in 2014.

“This is a great opportunity to meet with our counterparts in our neighboring states of Texas, New Mexico, Louisiana and Arkansas,” said Jeff Hamilton, chair of the Oklahoma Health Equity Campaign.  “All of us should be mindful that we are social by nature.  It is very important that we strive to connect because if we don’t, what binds us will unravel and so will our health.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines health equity in public health literature and practice as the opportunity for everyone to attain their full health potential. No one is disadvantaged from achieving this potential because of their social position or other socially determined circumstance. CDC further defines social determinants of health as life-enhancing resources, such as food supply, housing, economic and social relationships, transportation, education, and health care, whose distribution across populations effectively determines length and quality of life.
