Local Groups to Host Educational, Healthy Baby Showers

Free educational baby showers designed to help reduce Oklahoma’s infant mortality rates.

Greater Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Central Oklahoma Healthy Start Initiative, Service Site of Community Health Centers, Inc., the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) Office of Minority Health and community partners are hosting “A Healthy Baby Begins with You!” free, educational baby shower for pregnant women and women of child-bearing age.

Medical experts, health organizations and local community vendors will provide educational information to answer health questions and give information about community resources and services in the neighborhood to help at-risk mothers and their babies stay healthy during and after pregnancy.  “A Healthy Baby Begins with You” educational baby shower will be on Thursday, September 12, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Greater Mt. Olive Baptist Church, 1020 North East 42nd St, OKC, OK 73111 (NE 42nd and Kelly Ave).

This community baby shower will offer a free dinner for expectant moms, door prizes, and donated gifts for everyone who has a child under the age of two. To register, call Central Oklahoma Healthy Start at (405) 427-3200 or email at GMObabyshower@gmail.com

The community baby showers support a statewide initiative called “Preparing for A Lifetime – It’s Everyone’s Responsibility,” designed to reduce Oklahoma’s infant mortality rate (IMR). Currently about 400 babies die every year in Oklahoma before their first birthday. According to the OSDH Vital Records preliminary data, if Oklahoma can reduce its infant mortality rate from 7.9  in 2012 to  the national average of 6.15, then about 90 fewer babies would die every year.

Local nonprofit associations, women’s groups, and faith-based and child service organizations are encouraged to organize in their communities and unite with others to provide a “Healthy Baby Begins with You” community baby showers in their communities. The non-traditional settings help promote discussions with doctors and nurses in a nonclinical setting. Topics covered include risks leading to low birth weight babies, the importance of prenatal and well baby care and the importance of a mother’s health before, during and after pregnancy. The program is modeled after an evidence-based community initiative promoted by the National Office of Minority Health and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

For information about the baby shower at  Greater Mt. Olive Baptist Church or to register, call Central Oklahoma Healthy Start at (405) 427-3200 or email at GMObabyshower@gmail.com
