Get Moving in May, National Physical Fitness and Sports Month
Did you know that you don’t need to sweat in a gym or run a marathon to reap the health benefits of daily physical activity? Even 30 minutes of physical activity a day, reduced into shorter increments of ten or fifteen minutes, can greatly improve your health.
That’s the message the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) and the Strong and Healthy Oklahoma Initiative, along with the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, are using to challenge Oklahomans to get moving for health during May, National Physical Fitness and Sports Month.
“We all need to incorporate more movement into our daily lives,” said Interim Commissioner of Health Rocky McElvany. “Adults can choose to bike or walk instead of driving, take the stairs instead of elevators, or push a lawnmower instead of riding one. Children should be encouraged to run, climb, jump, and move away from their desks, the television and computer games.”
Numerous events and activities are scheduled for the month including “Bike to Work Day,” Friday, May 1. Several OSDH employees will be bicycling their way to work in support of this event. Visit www.bikedayok.com for more information.
Get the kids involved by encouraging their school to participate in Project ACES on Wednesday, May 9, at 10 a.m. ACES, or All Children Exercise Simultaneously, educates children about the importance of lifelong fitness. Each May for the past 20 years, millions of school children all over the globe have come together to exercise simultaneously in a symbolic gesture of fitness.
