What: News Conference - World TB Day
Tuberculosis (TB) continues to be a public health threat in Oklahoma. This news conference will provide an update on TB in Oklahoma in 2002 and an outbreak of TB that occurred in southwest Oklahoma in 2001 and 2002.

Background: This news conference is to increase awareness of TB in Oklahoma and the prevention, treatment, management and control of TB. Jon Tillinghast, M.D., will provide an annual update on the status of TB in Oklahoma and comment on the TB outbreak that occurred in southwest Oklahoma in 2001 and 2002 and highlight associated prevention and control efforts by public health officials.

Featuring:

  • State Health Commissioner Dr. Leslie Beitsch to discuss health care budget needs for the prevention and control of TB
  • State TB Control Officer Dr. Jon Tillinghast to discuss TB in Oklahoma and the southwest Oklahoma TB outbreak
  • Jackson County Health Department Public Health Nurse Fran Winters to discuss local issues and demonstrate the tuberculin skin test
  • Gary Porter, Ph.D., J.D., Nursing Home Operator and TB Coalition member to discuss concerns of the TB Coalition
  • Current TB patient will describe his symptoms and medical treatment from a patient’s perspective
