FOR RELEASE: April 14, 2003 Media Advisory Don’t Forget Today’s Activities Featuring Assistant U.S. Surgeon General What: Celebration of National Infant Immunization Week, April 13-19, 2003, featuring Assistant U.S. Surgeon General Walt Orenstein, M.D., Director, National Immunization Program, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Oklahoma’s state immunization program is one of only two programs selected by CDC to receive national attention during National Infant Immunization Week. Where/When: See Event List below. Special OKC Events: 9:30 a.m. - Britton Elementary School, 1215 NW 95th, “Vaccinations are Elementary.” The entire student body will turn out in a school assembly featuring Dr. Orenstein to celebrate the school’s 100 percent compliance with Oklahoma’s School Immunization Law, and 95 percent compliance for students’ immunization rate. Featured activities include awards, a special student rap song and a student play. 1:45 p.m. -- Media Kick Off -- St. Luke’s United Methodist Church Child Development Center, 222 NW 15th; OKC. This event will focus on the need to improve childhood immunization rates and the need to increase the number of infants receiving their 4th dose of DTaP vaccine by their second birthday. There will be a children’s program, Mayor’s Proclamation for NIIW, and remarks by Dr. Orenstein to parents and day care staff about the importance of childhood immunizations. The immunization mascots, Scrubby Bear and Elliott the Elephant, will be present to entertain the children.
