Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Training Offered

To improve the skills registered nurses and other individuals in Oklahoma need to interact with persons who have been the victim of sexual assault, several agencies are joining together to offer specialized training.

Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Training will be offered Tuesday, March 28, through Saturday, April 1, at the Ramada Inn, 51st and Harvard in Tulsa. This training is sponsored by Hillcrest Medical Center, Tulsa City-County Health Department, Tulsa Police Department, and the Oklahoma State Department of Health's Sexual Assault Prevention Education Program.

Participants will study the role and responsibility of the forensic nurse/sexual assault examiner, rape trauma/crisis intervention, medical and forensic protocol, evidence collection, the role of law enforcement, courtroom testimony, and rape crisis advocacy.

The course has been CLEET certified and approved for 44.5 contact hours through the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. Registration is $150. For registration information, contact Kathy Bell, RN, SANE Coordinator, Tulsa Police Department, phone 596-7608, or e-mail Kbell@ci.tulsa.ok.us.

The Oklahoma State Department of Health will consider travel reimbursement and lodging for Oklahoma nurses whose duty station is beyond a 60-mile radius of the training site, particularly nurses from underserved areas of the state. For more information on reimbursement possibilities, contact Kathy Middleton, coordinator of the state health department's Sexual Assault Prevention Education Program at 405/271-4072, ext. 57107, or e-mail kathymm@health.state.ok.us.
