Federal Medical Stations (FMS)

Federal Medical Stations are designed to assist state and local communities in times of disaster.  An FMS can be set-up as a temporary non-acute medical care facility.  It contains a cache of medical supplies and equipment as well as beds to accommodate up to 250 people for three days.

The Division of the Strategic National Stockpile deploys staff to assist in setup of the facility while the Department of Health and Human Services offers assistance in staffing the facility.  Federal Medical Stations were used during Hurricane Katrina to house evacuees requiring minor medical treatment.  They were also setup in Texas in expectation of Hurricane Dean in 2007, luckily, the site did not have to be used.  Click here to download a brochure on the Federal Medical Stations.
