Field Laboratory Operations (CHD only)

The Public Health Laboratory is responsible for 95 testing sites.

Provider-Performed Microscopy (Wet Prep only) may be offered to clients with the approval of the Director of the Public Health Laboratory, Dr. S. Terence Dunn. This testing is considered moderately complex and testing personnel must meet the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act ‘88 (CLIA) qualifications.

The Field Laboratory Operations Section (FLO) provides technical consultation for testing procedures, quality systems, laboratory techniques, and equipment evaluation.

CLIA requires Quality Assurance Reviews be conducted to evaluate and document county health department laboratory performance, and to make recommendations to improve the quality of testing.

Field Laboratory Operations personnel provide consultations, follow-up visits, and in-service training as needed.

The Good Laboratory Practice Manual has been developed to:

  • meet the CLIA requirements for:
     o pre-analytical testing
     o analytical testing
     o post analytical testing
  • provide a quick reference for quality control, and
  • delineate quality assurance guidelines for county health department laboratory testing
