Oklahoma Violent Death Reporting System Oklahoma is one of 17 states participating in the National Violent Death Reporting System. The Oklahoma Violent Death Reporting System is a collaborative effort of the Oklahoma State Department of Health, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. Violent deaths include homicide, suicide, unintentional firearm injury deaths, deaths from legal intervention, undetermined manner, and terrorism. Data are collected from death certificates, medical examiner reports, police reports, and supplemental homicide reports and include specific information on victims, suspects, circumstances, and weapons. During 2004-2006, there were 2,673 violent deaths among Oklahoma residents (annual rate = 25.1 deaths per 100,000 population). More than half (58%) of the deaths were suicides, 24% were homicides, 16% were of undetermined manner, 1% were due to legal intervention, and 1% were unintentional firearm deaths. Oklahoma's overall violent death rate was 31% higher than the U.S. rate, largely due to higher rates of suicide in Oklahoma. Annual summaries of the data can be accessed below.
