Oklahoma Violent Death Reporting System
Oklahoma is one of 17 states participating in the National Violent Death Reporting System. The Oklahoma Violent Death Reporting system is a collaborative effort of the Oklahoma State Department of Health, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. Violent deaths include homicide, suicide, unintentional firearm injury deaths, death from legal intervention, undetermined manner, and terrorism. Data is collected from death certificates, medical examiner reports, police reports, and supplemental homicide reports and includes specific information on victims, suspects, circumstances, and weapons.
In 2004, there were 874 violent deaths among Oklahoma residents. More than half (57%) of the deaths were suicides, 24% were homicides, 17% were of undetermined manner, 2% were due to legal intervention, and 1% were unintentional firearm deaths. The first two years of data have been summarized in the following report.
