 Oklahoma Asthma Prevention and Control Program

 Addressing Asthma from a Public Health Perspective

The Oklahoma Asthma Control Program is funded by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to develop asthma control plans that include disease tracking, science-based interventions, and state-wide partnerships to reduce the burden of asthma in the home, school, and occupational environments.

Asthma Surveillance in Oklahoma

  • The mortality rates of asthma were three times higher among African American than among Whites, 67% higher among American Indians than Whites, and 50% higher among females than males.
  •  The prevalence rate for lifetime asthma in Oklahoma adults is 11.0% and 7.2% for current asthma
  •  Nearly half of adults with asthma were diagnosed prior to the age of 11
  •  Approximately 20% of middle school students in Oklahoma report ever having asthma and 14% report currently having asthma. Among high school students, the rates were nearly 19% and 12%, respectively
