Ambulatory Surgery Center 2011 XML Data Submission Manual

The XML data submission format is a major change in the way free-standing ambulatory surgery centers will be submitting data in the future. XML will be the single required format in 2013.  The decision to convert data submissions from the fixed length flat file format to the more flexible XML format was based on the results of a Survey conducted in August of 2009 to all licensed Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASC). XML (Extensible Markup Language) is one of the latest and most effective technologies used to resolve data transfer compatibility issues.

Some of the advantages of moving to a XML format are:

  1. Instant response of file-format errors at the time of data submission
  2. Minimal burden due to future additions or revisions to the data fields.
  3. Minimizes data error and file handling.
  4. Resolves human readability and computer readability by tagging data.
  5. Also XML is the standard data transfer technology of choice for many of HIPAA electronic transmissions.)
