No direct dental care is provided at the health department.
The purpose of the dental education program is to introduce lifestyle changes to children and others, which decrease the chances of tooth decay and serve as a point of intervention for those children not accustomed to regular dental care.
Staff dental educators teach a dental health educational program entitled "Friend for Life," which instructs elementary school children k-6 to care for their mouth and teeth. The course consists of three separate lessons, one class period in length, with one lesson given each week for three consecutive weeks. Emphasis is placed on daily dental care, nutrition and tobacco education, and what to expect during the first visit to a dental office. A toothbrush, dental health materials and information are provided for each child.
As time permits, dental education programs and tobacco education programs may be provided in day care centers, nursing homes, nutrition sites, senior citizen and youth centers at no charge.
