Communicable Disease

Group of PeopleThe epidemiologists of the Acute Disease Service respond statewide to conduct epidemiologic investigations of unusual disease clusters and outbreaks of infectious diseases. The purpose of outbreak investigation is to identify the agent causing the illness, determine the source and how the infectious disease was transmitted, and to implement control measures to prevent additional diseases, thereby protecting the public. The County Health Department Communicable Disease Nurse conducts these investigations in partnership local health care providers, state epidemiologists and at times in cooperation with other OSDH Services, and State and Federal agencies.  Communicable Disease Nurses within the County Health Department are trained and qualified to respond to disease or outbreak situations that arise within the community.  They continuously monitor the OSDH reporting system for reportable illnesses and respond by conducting ongoing communication and consultation with Oklahoma State Department of Health Epidemiologists along with investigation with each disease case or person.
