Children First

Purpose

Registered nurses work with families expecting to deliver and/or parent their first child.  The goals of the program are to enhance a families ability to care for itself which leads to:

  • Improvement of pregnancy outcomes
  • Improvement of child health
  • Improvement of child development
  • Strengthened bond between child and parent
  • Achievement of personal goals
  • Improved utilization of and collaboration with community resources

The program encourages early and continuous prenatal care, personal development, and the involvement of fathers, grandparents and other supporting persons in parenting.

Services

The following services are provided to participating families:

  • Health assessments
  • Child development assessments
  • Parenting education
  • Nutrition education
  • Health and safety information
  • Linking families with services for health care, child care, mental health, and job training
  • Referrals to appropriate community service agencies

Enrollment Criteria

  • Pregnant women less than 28 weeks gestation
  • Families expecting to deliver and/or parent their first child
  • Families with limited financial or social support

Fees

No fee is charged.

Hours

Services are generally provided from 8:00 to 5:00.  Hours vary depending on the needs of the individuals.

Services are provided by Comanche County Health Department by appointment only.  Call (580) 585-6712 for appointment.

Important Information

Public Health Nurses provide home visitation services during pregnancy and the first two years of the child's life using the following schedule:

  • Weekly visits during the first month
  • Biweekly visits until delivery
  • Weekly visits during the first six weeks after delivery
  • Every other week visits until the 21st month of childhood
  • Monthly visits until the child reaches age two

Providers

Public Health Nurses make the home visits.
