Oklahoma Turning Point Initiative

In 1998, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation supplied Oklahoma with grant money to begin a pilot project known as Turning Point. The money was divided between three communities: Cherokee, Texas and Tulsa counties.  The pilot project was very successful and today, there are 73 community partnerships in Oklahoma participating in the Turning Point Initiative.  With success ranging from the establishment of new community health centers to improved nutrition in schools to whole communities exercising on newly developed trails, Turning Point is helping to enhance the health status of Oklahomans. These successes are possible only because of the dedication and commitment of the local partners.  

There are seven steps you can follow for a partnership connection:

Step 1.  Contact the regional Turning Point Field Consultant for assistance with leadership structure, committee structure, bylaws and communication.  Click here to determine who the regional Turning Point Field Consultant would be for your county.

Step 2.  Ask the regional Turning Point Field Consultant for ideas, suggestions and activities taking place in other partnerships.

Step 3.  Assess your community's health status using the local data and personal knowledge of your community.  

Step 4.  Establish your community's key priorities based on your community assessment.

Step 5.  Develop proactive plans to improve the community's health based on your partnership's priorities.

Step 6.  Put the plans into action.

Step 7.  Evaluate your success and start the process over again with your community partnership's next priority.
