The 6th Annual Turning Point Policy Day was held Wednesday, September 3, 2014, at the Reed Conference Center, Midwest City, OK. The following primary policy objectives has been set for the calendar year 2015:
♦ Mandate utilization of the Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) for all providers when prescribing controlled substances.
♦ Allow for increased information sharing among various agencies and boards to increase prescription drug abuse.
♦ Require staff development training to identify students mental health needs.
♦ Develop legislation to strengthen requirements of school Healthy and Fit Committees.
Physical Activity and Nutrition
♦ Adopt mandatory health and physical education in schools through grades K-12.
♦ Incorporate complete streets concepts when doing any maintenance on existing streets.
♦ Require all public school districts to be tobacco and vapor product-free on school grounds, property, vehicles, and during any school-sponsored functions held off-campus.
♦ Promote smoke-free multi-unit housing.
♦ Advocate for state leaders to understand the link between health and literacy; and consequently, reinstate funding for adult-literacy programs.
♦ Request state legislature to conduct an interim study examining the effects of low health literacy.
♦ Increase funding for mental health services that include but are not limited to: transportation, reimbursements, in-patient and out-patient services, care coordination, treatment and prevention.
♦ Increase awareness and support for mental health in communities, workplaces, schools, health providers, faith based, and universities through mandates to training of staff and/or continuing education for staff and providers, in QPR, suicide prevention, or mental health first aide or response classes.
