Young Adolescent Girl and Teen Boy HuggingYouth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) Program

The Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) is a survey tool designed to evaluate health risk behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of mortality and morbidity as well as social problems facing our youth in the United States. The survey consists of six behavior categories: unintentional and intentional injury, tobacco use, alcohol and other drug use, sexual behaviors, dietary behaviors, and physical activity. The survey also analyzes body mass index (BMI), as it is self-reported, and asthma.

The YRBS was developed by the CDC in collaboration with federal, state, and private-sector partners, this voluntary system includes a national survey and surveys conducted by state, local education, and health agencies (CDC, 2003).

The Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) promotes the use of the YRBS in two ways: randomized statewide CDC surveys, and self-selected, school surveys. Statewide surveys are administered using the established CDC protocol and in partnership with CDC every two years. The randomized YRBS is utilized nationwide by the CDC in ninth through twelfth grade classrooms to determine the prevalence of health risk behaviors, assess whether health risk behaviors increase, decrease, or stay the same over time, examine the co-occurrence of health risk behaviors, provide comparable national and state data, provide comparable data among subpopulations of youth, and monitor progress toward achieving the Healthy People 2010 objectives and other program indicators.

Oklahoma high schools that request a comprehensive YRBS assessment of their individual high school students are provided the support and analyses to conduct their own confidential survey.
