Gov. Henry Honored by National Guard Association
September 11, 2009

(Oklahoma City) Gov. Brad Henry is being honored for his support of the Oklahoma National Guard with the Charles Dick Medal of Merit, presented by the National Guard Association of the United States. Gov. Henry was nominated for the award by Oklahoma Adjutant General, Maj. Gen. Myles Deering.

"Governor Henry's support means everything to the men and women serving our state, especially to those citizen-soldiers that are engaged in the current conflicts in the Middle East,” Maj. Gen. Deering said. “His receipt of this prestigious award allows us to tell the rest of our Nation how much we appreciate his leadership, support and consistency in demanding the best for our troops.

"As Commander in Chief of the Oklahoma Army and Air National Guard, Governor Henry was instrumental in ensuring that our soldiers and airmen received increased insurance benefits that would help take care of their families and loved ones. He understands the sacrifices being made on a daily basis by our service members, their families, and employers and leads the way in his show of support."

In nominating Gov. Henry, Maj. Gen. Deering cited many of the governor’s legislative accomplishments, including:

? Operation Homefront, which included income tax relief and life insurance policies for every member of the Oklahoma National Guard and Air National Guard;
? the Oklahoma Emergency Relief Fund, which offers temporary assistance to Guard families during difficult financial times;
? continued funding of the Oklahoma National Guard State Tuition Waiver Program;
? Operation Holiday Homecoming, which brought Oklahoma Guard members home for the holidays from training in Fort Hood Texas;
? and visits to Oklahoma Guard units in Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait, as well as support for units deployed to assist with recovery efforts after Hurricane Katrina.

“It is truly an honor to be recognized by the men and women who serve our state and our country in the National Guard,” Gov. Henry said. “The members of the Oklahoma National Guard sacrifice so much to defend our freedoms and provide safety and security, and it is only fitting that we do as much as possible to support them and their families.”
