The Oklahoma Innovation and Technology Plan

The Oklahoma Innovation and Technology Plan analyses today’s technology-based, global economy and Oklahoma’s place in it, summarizes example actions taken by other states, and then recommends eight actions that will strengthen Oklahoma’s economy.

The Oklahoma Innovation and Technology Plan was approved by the Economic Development Generating Excellence (EDGE) Policy Board on July 10, 2009.   This Plan, however, is not a static document—it will evolve as new information becomes available and as recommendations from the Plan are enacted and implemented.

Updates

The following Updates to the Oklahoma Innovation and Technology Plan summarize new information that is pertinent to the Plan.  In this way the Plan always stays current and its implementation will always be based on the most recent information.

Hall of Science

September 2009

Oklahoma has made significant gains in annual per capita personal income, moving from $23,582 (42nd among states) in the year 2000, to $36,899 (28th) in 2008.  A recent survey
(http://scorecard.cfed.org) showed that the state scored high on home affordability (2nd), median credit card debt (10th), annual unemployment (6th), employment growth (9th), small business ownership (9th) and college graduates with debt (11th).   And yet Oklahoma ranks 44th in net worth, 44th in income poverty, 41st in low wage jobs, 44th in eighth grade math proficiency, 37th in eight grade reading proficiency and 42nd  for four-year college degrees.  Most tellingly, nearly one in four (23%) Oklahomans has less than three months worth of income at the poverty level ($6,000) in total savings and assets.
