GRANT TITLE: PAUL COVERDELL FORENSIC SCIENCE IMPROVEMENT GRANT (COVERDELL)

OVERVIEW: The purpose of the Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement  Grant is to improve the quality of forensic science services for the criminal justice system and to reduce the backlog of forensic evidence in criminal justice cases.

ELIGIBILITY: To be eligible for funding under this grant program, an applicant must be a(n): a) State Agency or b) Unit of Local Government (i.e., city, county, town) and have an established forensic science laboratory that employs generally accepted practices and procedures as established by the appropriate accrediting organization and is accredited by the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors Laboratory Accreditation Board (ASCLD-LAB) or a medical examiners office that employs generally accepted practices and procedures as established by appropriate accrediting organizations and is accredited by the National Association of Medical Examiners.

BOARD PRIORITIES: The Forensic Science Task Force, comprised of ten members uses a consensus decision-making process in determining the use of the grant funds.

DEADLINE TO SUBMIT AN APPLICATION: The deadline for the 2005 application has passed. Depending on federal funding, it is anticipated that grant applications will be available in 2006.

Interesting Facts
  • Title O.S. 74 150.37 requires all labs in Oklahoma to become accredited by the American Society of Certified Lab Directors Laboratory Accreditation Board (ASCLD-LAB) or the American Board of Forensic Toxicologists (ABFT).

  • Throughout the nation, there are only three states, New York, Oklahoma, and Texas, that require ASCLD-LAB accredition.

  • Out of 301 ASCLD-LAB accredited labs, the State of Oklahoma has six.

  • Oklahoma is one of 21 medical examiner's offices to be accredited by the ABFT.
