Water Quality Division

Stream Protection Through Education

The Blue Thumb Water Quality Education Program is the educational arm of the OCC Water Quality Division. Blue Thumb trains volunteers to monitor streams in their communities, conduct groundwater screenings, and to share their knowledge of water quality with others. Volunteers include an array of student groups, Girl and Boy Scout troops, families, couples, and individual citizens monitoring 100 streams across Oklahoma. Click on the links below to learn more.

Monitoring

Blue Thumb teaches volunteers to monitor streams to learn about stream health. Volunteers gather data on:

  • Water chemistry
  • Stream life
  • Physical characteristics

When combined, these different data tell the complete story about a stream's health.

Volunteers monitor over 300 streams across Oklahoma. Some volunteers also give presentations to schools and civic groups.
