Reading, Writing and Comprehension Test

This statute applies only to law enforcement personnel or peace officers attending the basic law enforcement certification class at the State of Oklahoma Law Enforcement Training Center in Ada, Oklahoma.

In accordance with Title 70 O.S. 3311.11, beginning November 1, 2009, any person who is employed as a peace officer within the State of Oklahoma and who is scheduled to attend the basic law enforcement certification academy conducted by Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training (CLEET) shall, within ninety (90) days of hire and prior to CLEET admission, be required to score a minimum of seventy percent (70%) on a reading, writing, and comprehension examination approved and administered by CLEET. The purpose of this test is to ensure the applicant can read and write on a level necessary to perform the requirements of the CLEET basic academy.

For purposes of this document, the reading, writing, and comprehension examination is referred to as the “OPOST Test.”

• All CLEET academy applicants must, within ninety (90) days of hire and prior to CLEET admission, score a minimum of 70% on the OPOST. Any applicant who fails to achieve a minimum of 70% on the test will not be admitted into the basic academy.

• The CLEET test is a standardized police POST examination prepared for the State of Oklahoma and validated by Stanard & Associates, Inc.

• CLEET will post on their website the location, date, and times the test will be administered across the State of Oklahoma. The test will be administered once per month at ten (10) locations across the state. CLEET is also working with the Oklahoma Technology Testing Centers to develop a program for candidates to take the OPOST during normal hours at Technology Centers throughout the state.

• Law enforcement agencies may elect to use the OPOST instrument as either a pre-hire or post-hire screening mechanism. Candidates must take the OPOST within ninety (90) days before being hired by an agency or within ninety (90) days of the date of hire.

Please read the documents below for more information on the OPOST Test and for specific testing requirements.
