INTERPRETER SERVICES FOR THE DEAF

Interpreter Services Program, Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services, 5813 S. Robinson, Oklahoma City, OK 73109, 405-634-9937 VR7-1 800-833-8973 VITT; 405-631-8115 fax. Interpreters provided at no charge to deaf or hearing impaired persons for

*Non-emergency medical appointments. *Job interviews, placement and orientation (receiving instructions on a new job). *All contacts with the Department of Rehabilitation Services. *Discussing and signing major contracts such as loans, insurance, buying or renting a house, car furniture, etc. *Other approved critical or emergency situations in which an interpreter is needed.

The Interpreter Services Program can also help locate interpreters for other situations, even though it cannot pay for them.

The state's "Interpreter for the Deaf Act" requires provision of interpreters in administrative, civil and criminal proceedings where a deaf person is a witness, complainant or defendant. Under the Act, state and local agencies must also provide interpreters when needed by a deaf person involved in any proceedings under their jurisdiction. When a deaf person is taken into custody by the police, he or she must be provided with an interpreter. Under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and under the Americans with Disabilities Act, many government agencies and businesses must provide interpreters in certain circumstances. For example, a hospital may be obligated to provide and pay for an interpreter for a patient; a business may need to provide an interpreter for a deaf employee in a required training activity; or a service agency may have to provide an interpreter in order to provide services to a deaf client. Interpreter fees are charged to agencies and businesses required by law to provide equal access to hearing impaired persons.

The cost of hiring an interpreter varies depending on the interpreter's skill certification level. To locate an interpreter call Oklahoma Services to the Deaf Unlimited (the vendor used by DRS):
