Connecting Oklahomans with Disabilities to Assistive Technology

Oklahoma Assistive Technology Program

(Brochure PDF)  (Large Print PDF)

Who We Are

Oklahoma ABLE Tech promotes the availability of assistive technology (AT) devices and services for people with disabilities. AT is any item or piece of equipment used to maintain or improve the capabilities of people with disabilities. Assistive technology allows people with disabilities to function independently in recreation, education, employment, and daily living activities.

Programs include:
• Device demonstration centers
• Device short-term loans
• AT reutilization
• Low interest bank loans

Assistive technology is redefining what is possible for people with disabilities.

Device Demonstration Centers

ABLE Tech’s AT Demonstration Centers improve access to assistive technology. AT Centers are available throughout the state at partnering locations. The assistive technology demonstration centers give individuals a chance to see, touch, and try assistive
technology devices to help individuals compare features and to help in the decision making process.

Demonstrations provide:
• Hands-on exploration of assistive technology
• Information on the latest technology
• Low tech solutions and adaptations
• Vendor sources

Who benefits from demo centers?
• People with disabilities
• Family members
• Service providers
• Advocates
• Educators

AT inventory categories:
• Vision

Device Short-term Loans

Assistive technology allows people with disabilities to function independently in recreation, education, employment, and daily living activities. How do you determine what will or will not work for you? That’s easy...you try it out!

ABLE Tech AT Centers are available throughout the state at partnering locations. The short-term loan program provides Oklahomans with disabilities the opportunity to borrow devices to:
• Make an informed decision before purchase
• Ensure compatibility between the device and user
• Have back-up equipment while waiting for repair
• Have a device while waiting for new equipment

The short-term loan program is easy to use and free (some partner locations require a deposit). Loan duration is 2 to 6 weeks and is available to anyone in Oklahoma.

Who can benefit from the device loan program?
• People with disabilities and family members
• Therapists
• Educators
• Employers
• Service providers

AT inventory categories:
• Hearing
• Vision
• Education
• Recreation
• Communication
• Computer access
• Cognitive learning
• Aids for daily living

AT Reutilization

Recycle
In need of a computer? ABLE Tech partners with the Sooner “AMBUCS/ASK” program, a community service project that repairs and recycles donated computers. The program distributes computers free to Oklahomans with disabilities. To request an
application, call 405-360-1521.

Equipment Exchange
Do you have assistive technology you no longer use? Do you need a device you cannot afford? The Oklahoma Equipment Exchange can help you recycle your equipment and provide a way to locate
assistive technology at a reasonable price. The program is a person to person exchange which functions like the newspaper classifieds. It provides listings of pre-owned equipment for sale and donation.
To access this free service, visit the Equipment Exchange website at http://oec.okstate.edu. Don’t have access to a computer? Call us. We’ll be happy to post the listing or search for a product for you.

Bank Loans

The price of assistive technology may be out of reach for a person with a disability. Oklahoma ABLE Tech can help make it affordable with the low interest bank loan program. Borrowers can use the
loans to buy the assistive technology they need. The Alternative Financing Program is open to Oklahoma residents with disabilities and their families.

Assistive technology can open the door to our rightful place in the working world.

Telework Loans

Job opportunities! The Telework Loan Program provides low interest bank loans to people with disabilities for home-based employment. Telework is full or part-time paid employment at home.

Telework loans may be used for:
• Computers & related software
• Fax machines, printers, and scanners
• Telecommunication devices
• Assistive technology related to telework
• Office furniture
• Home modifications
• Other equipment needed for telework
